Richard "Rick" Wayne McCune, a man who probably could have fixed your car, restored your trusty old wood chair, and serenaded you with country tunes all before breakfast, decided to take his final road trip on May 22, 2026, from the comfort of his own residence. Born on July 8, 1962, in Durham, North Carolina, Rick was a self-employed mechanic whose talents extended well beyond greasy engines and wrenches.
Rick was the kind of guy who had an old soul, a laid-back demeanor, and the kind of country charm that made everyone around him smile. People often said he had a great sense of humor — so good, in fact, that it could help anybody. Whether he was singing off-key yet heartily to his beloved wife Joyce Ann McLeod (the lucky lady who has stood by his side for 24 years) or taking spontaneous road trips down back roads to Myrtle Beach, Rick’s laid-back spirit was infectious.
One of Rick's favorite pastimes was woodworking: when the city would put out their pick-ups, he’d be out riding around, rescuing worn-out wooden furniture like some sort of wood-whisperer. With a little elbow grease and a lot of love, he’d fix them up and sell them, likely while humming a country ballad. He also prided himself on the cars he lovingly restored—each one a beautiful testament to his patience and skills, and arguably better than the original showroom models.
His many memories were as sweet as roadside stand peaches—particularly those peaches he relished while riding through scenic routes. But more than anything, his kindness and his willingness to sing for and with Joyce were remembered fondly by all who knew him.
Rick leaves behind an impressive entourage: his wife Joyce; his daughter Heather Yang; seven grandchildren, who presumably got their spunky spirit from him—Rikki, Adam, Diamond, Hayden Yang, Shaylen, Sheldon, and Shelby Miller; and four sisters spread across Ohio and West Virginia: Arbutus Blosser, Capitola Fredricks, Natasha (John) Grew, and Theresa McCune.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ralph Major and Anna Belle (Roberts) McCune, his son Shawn Miller (who most likely got to ride shotgun on heaven’s best road trips), and his brother Michael Butcher.
If Heaven is lucky, they’ve gained one heck of a handy mechanic and a spirited singer who can brighten a room—even if now his audience is angelic. We’ll miss Rick’s humor, his kindness, and those spur-of-the-moment road trips, but we suspect he’s already got the clouds arranged for a smooth ride. Rest easy, Rick—you fixed a lot of things in this world, but this last time, you finally put down the wrench. Schuetz Funeral Home is assisting the family.
