Orville “Allen” Smith, a man who truly lived life in the fast lane—both on the road and in spirit—passed away unexpectedly on May 24, 2026, at Wheeling Hospital. Born on August 23, 1960, in Spencer, WV, Allen’s journey was anything but ordinary, marked by a warm heart, a playful sense of humor, and an undeniable knack for turning ordinary moments into unforgettable memories.
A proud graduate of St. Clairsville High School in 1979, Allen found his calling behind the wheel as a dedicated truck driver and union member of Teamsters Local #697. He wasn’t just driving; he was weaving stories across the states that involved blasting music and singing his heart out in the car, daring jumps over railroad tracks in an old Ford flatbed (because why not?), and the occasional (or maybe frequent) misadventure like leaving his kids in a bee-filled car or taking out the Taco Bell sign during a winter storm when picking up his children. If road trip legends had a hall of fame, Allen would have a prime spot for these escapades.
Allen was a man of many delights: a warm cup of coffee was as essential to him as his family, and he treasured the simple joy of hanging out and talking with anyone willing to listen—and maybe even a bit of harmless flirting with the ladies along the way. His greatest pride, however, lay in being present for his children and grandchildren and his contributions as a good Lisner and pipeline worker, roles he held with a quiet but steady pride.
Known for his gift of gab and heartfelt jokes, Allen could brighten a room—or a long haul—just by being in it. His warm spirit and humorous tales ensured he was always the life of the party, the anchor for his loved ones, and a friend who could lighten any mood.
Allen leaves behind a vibrant and loving family who carry forward his legacy: his five children—James (Paige) Smith of Bridgeport, Orville A. (Alexis) Smith of West Liberty, Lela (Anthony) Bautista of Martins Ferry, Angelica Smith of St. Clairsville, and William Smith of St. Clairsville—along with five grandchildren, Clayton, Nolee, Dia, Case, and Cora. By his side in family lineage also stands his sister Kathy Riley of St. Clairsville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Russel Eugene and Eloise (Starcher) Smith, and three brothers, Russel “Rusty” Smith, Oscar Smith, and Ted “Teddy” Smith.
Family, friends, and all who knew Allen are invited to celebrate his life at a memorial service on May 28, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Elm Grove Civics Association, located at 21 Sycamore Ave, Wheeling, WV 26003. Come ready to share a laugh, a story, and perhaps a toast with a warm cup of coffee in his honor—as Allen himself would have insisted.
Though the road has ended for Orville “Allen” Smith, his journey lives on vividly in the hearts and memories of those fortunate enough to have traveled alongside him. He taught us not only how to drive great distances but how to make every mile count, with laughter, love, and just the right amount of mischief. Rest easy, Allen—you’ve earned your forever place on the highway of legend. Schuetz Funeral Home is assisting the family.
