Olga "O" F. Yates

Olga “O” F. Yates, passed away on September 17, 2026, at Trinity West after a battle with cancer that began in 2016. She was born on April 16, 1959, in Steubenville, Ohio.

O lived with strength, faith, and determination. A fighter in every sense, she faced life with courage and resilience, and that same spirit carried her through the years of her illness. She was also a brown belt in karate, a reflection of the toughness and discipline that were part of who she was. At the same time, she was known as a wonderful and caring person, organized, dedicated, and stubborn in the way those who loved her understood well. She had a good sense of humor, always wore a smile, and was deeply grounded in her faith. A devoted member of Wintersville Baptist Temple, she knew the Lord and never missed church.

She was a 1977 graduate of Big Red High School and also attended JVS for Child Care. Her working life was marked by commitment and service. After attending the Ohio State Police Academy, she went on to work at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office for 33 and a half years. She also served as a member of the Welfare Department Committee and was a member of the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce. Her long career reflected her dedication to her community and the steady, dependable way she carried herself through life.

Beyond her work, O found joy in simple pleasures and in the people she loved most. She enjoyed bingo, thrift stores, garage sales, throw blankets, going out to eat, and adult coloring books with gel pens. Holidays were especially dear to her, and so were the traditions that came with them. She was always about being with family, and she will be remembered for her Christmas sweater, her Thanksgiving sweater, and for being big on the holidays. She will also be fondly remembered for the foods that brought comfort and togetherness to those around her, especially her green beans, mac and cheese, and lima beans.

Among her proudest accomplishments were her child and grandchild, who brought great meaning and happiness to her life. She is survived by her son, Shawn M. Yates and his wife, Jessica, of Steubenville, Ohio; her granddaughter, Deyzha M. Yates; Vernon R. Yates of Steubenville. and cousins, Craig Spinner of Steubenville, Charisse McClandough, special cousin Crystal “CHAMP” Harper of Mingo Junction, and Each of them shared in the love, laughter, and lasting bond that O gave so freely, and her memory will remain a treasured part of their lives.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Sarah J. Yates, and her maternal grandfather, Richard and wife E. Yates.

Olga “O” F. Yates will be remembered for her faith, her strength, her devotion to family, and the smile she carried through life. Her presence brought warmth to gatherings, comfort to those she loved, and a steady example of perseverance to everyone who knew her.
