Kathie Louise Francis, lovingly known to many as “Mamma Dukes,” passed away in Wheeling, West Virginia, on October 29, 2026, due to complications of cancer. She was born on August 11, 1956, in Tazewell, Virginia.
Kathie was known and loved by everyone who had the blessing of crossing her path. She was funny, understanding, and deeply caring, a woman with a huge heart who did not judge others and would give the shirt off her back to help someone in need. She was the kind of strong person who did not let life’s hardships bring her down, and her loving spirit left a lasting impression on family, friends, and all who knew her.
She worked most of her life at the JP Steavens Textile Plant and later at Hank’s Bar in Powhatan Point, Ohio. In every season of her life, Kathie brought warmth and personality with her, whether through her work, her friendships, or the comfort she gave to those around her.
Kathie found joy in the things that made life rich and memorable. She loved cooking, traveling, sewing books and blankets, drawing, and spending time with the music of Bob Marley and Elvis Presley. She also enjoyed western shows, especially Heartland and Yellowstone. She was remembered as a true Southern cook whose food was always wanted and always enjoyed. Among the many memories her loved ones will carry forward is her trip to Jamaica to celebrate her 60th birthday, a joyful occasion that reflected her love of life and adventure.
Nothing meant more to Kathie than her family. Her children and grandchildren were her proudest accomplishments, alongside the coleslaw recipe that became part of her special legacy. She is survived by her four children, Carrie Gable, George Boothe, Melinda Martin and her spouse Jason Martin, and Lois Francis. Her love also lives on in Dalton Johnson, Ricky Johnson, Jeremy Coulter, Christian Boothe, Ethan Boothe, Breanna Boothe, Danielle Parker Ramberg, Anthony and Nathaniel Boothe, Brayden Adams, Jessica Stapp, Preston Francis, Kiersyn Martin, and Scarlett Martin.
She is also survived by her brother, Terry Boothe of Iron Station, North Carolina, and her sisters, Gwendolyn Winchester of Moundsville, and Julie Seriocarney and Belinda Boothe of Long Neck, Delaware. Kathie also leaves behind her friend William Francis, along with many others whose lives were brightened by her kindness, humor, and generous heart.
She was preceded in death by Charlie Boothe, Sylvia “Rose” Boothe, her stepfather Dewey Moort, and her sister Debra Mort.
Kathie will be remembered for the laughter she shared, the comfort she gave so freely, the meals she prepared with love, and the strength she carried through every chapter of life. Her family and friends will hold close the memory of a woman who loved deeply, cared endlessly, and made people feel at home. Her presence will be missed beyond words, but her spirit will continue to live on in the many lives she touched.
