John "Jack" Morrison West, a man whose very name conjured the spirit of dedication, generosity, and steadfast love, passed away unexpectedly on May 3, 2026, at his home. Born on September 14, 1947, in Cadiz, Ohio, Jack was a beloved son, brother, father, grandfather, and friend whose life was marked by unwavering commitment and a heart that knew no bounds in generosity.
Jack’s formative years were shaped in the halls of Smithfield High School, from which he graduated with the Class of 1965. Not long after, he answered the call of duty and served his country with honor in the United States Army, embodying the valor and discipline befitting a true patriot. His service was but one chapter in a life devoted to both work and family.
Professionally, Jack dedicated many years to the City of Steubenville, retiring from the Water Filtration Plant where his work ensured the health and well-being of his community. His expertise and reliability there mirrored his personal character—dependable, skilled, and deeply caring.
Jack was a true jack of all trades, a man whose talents and knowledge spanned countless fields, yet it was his giving heart that most endeared him to those who knew him. Whether it was fishing along a quiet stream, embracing the wilderness on camping trips, or meticulously collecting cherished items, his interests spoke to a soul both adventurous and appreciative of the simple beauties of life. It was said that he could do anything for you; indeed, Jack was the great big brother everyone wished to have.
Family gatherings were incomplete without Jack at the grill, where he would craft meals with an artistry born of love and tradition. His grilling was renowned, and his greens, lovingly prepared, were unmatched—a culinary legacy treasured by all fortunate enough to share in those moments. Particularly memorable is his joyful presence at family picnics, where he took pride in cooking every dish, a testament to his generous nature and dedication to bringing people together.
Jack’s life was marked by both joyous accomplishments and profound sorrows. He took particular pride in his son, John Keith West, whose memory he held dear even as he endured the profound loss of this only child. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, John Merle and Valgene (Hython) West; his son, John Keith West; three loving sisters, Carolyn Miller, Jeanie Lewis, and Kim West; and his brother, Charles West.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and remembrance in the hearts of the living—his three siblings: Richard "Rick" West (and wife Roberta) of Verona, Pennsylvania; Debra Smith (and husband Craig) of Mingo Junction, Ohio; and Jacqueline Cash of Steubenville, Ohio. This devoted family circle, alongside grandchildren and great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and special Daughter in law Tatanise Marshall, will carry forward the memories of a man who exemplified kindness, strength, and an enduring familial bond.
A visitation to honor Jack’s life will be held on May 9, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Schuetz Funeral Home, located at 235 Clifton Avenue in Mingo Junction, Ohio, where friends and family may gather to pay their respects. The funeral service will immediately follow at 2:00 PM with Rev. Craig Smith with the Smithfield Christian Church.
Jack Morrison West’s journey through life was one marked by selflessness, resilience, and an unyielding devotion to those he loved. His memory will continue to illuminate the lives of all who knew him, a testament to a life well lived and a heart forever giving. In all our hearts, Jack will remain that familiar, steadfast presence—a brother, a son, a friend who could always be counted upon, a man of many talents and one generous, loving spirit.
