Gary Edward Smith

April 21, 1950 — April 22, 2025

McMechen, WV

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gary Edward Smith, who left this world on April 22, 2025, at the age of 75. Though his departure came too soon, we find solace in knowing that he is now at peace after a long battle with mental illness.  Born on April 21, 1950, Gary was a beloved husband to Mary Jo and a devoted father to their daughter, Melissa. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Charles Thomas and June Eileen (Salyers) Smith and his brother-in-law, James Friend. He was a gentle soul and kind-hearted.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Jo Smith of McMechen, and their daughter, Melissa Smith of Pittsburgh, both of whom were the lights of his life. He also leaves behind his sisters-in-law Virginia (Ginny) Friend and Loretta DiCrease of Benwood, cousins Donna and Bill Grigsby, Pamela Campbell, and Barbara Thornton of Wheeling. A nephew, Michael (Shawna) Friend of Powhatan Point, a niece, Michele (Greg) Evans of McMechen, Stefanie (Ray) Shorter, who was like a daughter to him and held a special place in his heart, several great nieces and nephews, other extended family members, and many friends who will forever cherish the moments they shared with him. Also, grieving in his absence are his two loyal dogs; Pouncey and Bubba, who never left his side and brought him comfort through his hardest days.

Mental illness is often invisible, and Gary carried more than his share in silence. He fought courageously for years, seeking hope in the darkness, and doing his best to be present for those he loved. In the end, his pain became too great a burden. While we grieve his absence, we also honor the strength it took to keep going for as long as he did.In honoring his life, we ask others to extend grace, to reach out to those who may be struggling, and to continue working toward a world where no one feels alone in their suffering.

A Catholic mass will be held on Saturday May 10th, 2025 at 11:00 am at St. John’s Catholic Church in Benwood. A luncheon will follow in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the family. Schuetz Funeral Home is assisting the family.
