Elizabeth "Liz" Arlene Smogonovich, affectionately known as “Liz” and widely adored as “mema,” 98, left this world on November 26, 2025, in Steubenville, Ohio. Born on October 8, 1927, in the quaint town of Mt. Pleasant, Ohio, Liz was a beacon of light to all who knew her.

A devoted worker, Liz dedicated 42 years of her life to Capri Sausage, where her laughter and spirit were as integral to the workplace. Her journey began at Steubenville High School, a humble start that would blossom into a rich tapestry of a life lived with zest and warmth.

Liz was a woman of many passions. She could often be found sitting on her front porch, basking in the sunlight, loved to crochet, periodically pausing to enjoy the soothing melodies of her radio. A devoted fan of Wheel of Fortune and a fierce competitor in Scrabble, she engaged life as she engaged her games—full of cheerful determination and joy. The community at the senior swims cherished her presence as a dedicated lap swimmer; her ability to forge friendships with ease—she never knew an enemy—remained one of her most treasured attributes.

Family was the very heart of Liz's world. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Terri L. Fithen of Mingo Junction, and a proud array of grandchildren—Tara Smogonovich of Steubenville, John Smogonovich of Youngstown, and Ryan Smogonovich of Steubenville. Liz's legacy continues through her three great grandsons, Blaze Wile, Kade, and Huey Smogonovich, along with her  granddaughter, Ash Smogonovich.

Liz's passing leaves a void; she was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 46 years, Robert “Boshie” Smogonovich, along with her daughter Cheryl "Cheri" and son Robert W. "Bobby" Smogonovich. The family also mourns the loss of her  granddaughter Kerri Fithen-Wile.

Surrounded by those she held dear, Liz departed this life peacefully, a testament to a life beautifully lived—a life rich with love, laughter, and cherished memories. As we remember Liz, we celebrate the joy she brought to our lives, a spirit who transformed the ordinary into the extraordinary simply by being present. Her laughter echoes in the hearts of her family, a melody that will continue to resonate for generations to come. There will be no services, cremation has been chosen. Schuetz Funeral Home is assisting the family.
