Listen to Obituary

David Daniel McConnaughy, born on March 2, 1961, left this world on July 27, 2026. Though his road on this earth has come to its bittersweet end, the echoes of his laughter, the timbre of his convictions, and the steadiness of his love remain indelibly etched in the memory of all who knew him.

His journey began in the embrace of the McConnaughy family, cherished son of the late William and Shirley McConnaughy. The bonds of family were the heart of David’s every ambition; his siblings—John, Rick, Donny (Dawn), Bill, Barbara Ballard, Kim Gray, Beverly, —walked alongside him, sharing adventures, stories, and the daily folds of life. He also deeply missed those siblings who went before him, Terry, Mark, and Patty VanHorn, each held close in his memory.

David’s path led him beyond the familiar, from graduating high school at California Airforce Base to mastering the open roads through CDL Driving School. He set forth as a dedicated over-the-road truck driver, earning a tanker endorsement and confidently navigating highways and landscapes unknown to most. With hands as skilled as they were steady, he traversed well over one million miles, his expertise recognized by a bonus for safe driving—a fitting testament to his unwavering attention and resolve.

Yet David was more than the roads he traveled. He lived a life colored by passions and the warmth of shared moments. A fervent Ohio State Buckeye fan, his devotion came alive on game days and in spirited conversations. He brought history to life as a Civil War reenactor, stepping into the past with reverence and a gleam in his eye. Those closest to him recall the patient hours he devoted to model ship-building and painting intricate soldiers—each brushstroke and carefully placed piece turning imagination into reality.

Family traditions defined David’s heart. Every holiday was marked by meaningful work and vibrant celebration. Memorial Day was spent lovingly decorating graves, a gesture of remembrance followed by a family picnic, weaving respect and joy together. His kindness expressed itself in the simplest, yet most profound of ways: generosity toward his family, the glimmer of a dry wit that left children guessing—is he serious?—and a steadfast belief in the bonds that kept his circle close.

David reveled in life’s comforts. Friends and family would find him savoring moments with his beloved wife, Mary C.V. Myers McConnaughy, and enjoying the company of his big screen TV. His appetite for good food was legendary, especially for the sirloin steak that only his daughter, Kaitlyn  Campbell, could perfect—a meal that warmed not just the body but the soul. His pride in his family—his children, Shane Sonya McConnaughy and Kaitlyn, and his granddaughters, Amberleigh and Gemma—radiated through every word and every action. They were his proudest accomplishments, outshining even the accolades earned over the million miles.

Also, several nieces and nephew and cousins. All our dogs passed and present always had a special place in his heart

David viewed the world through the lens of a robust sense of humor—“I am always right but seldom wrong,” he’d say, delivering the line with a wink that revealed the playful spirit within. He was a man of convictions, unafraid to share his beliefs, and loved a good discussion on politics. He called himself “one MAGA man,” but above all, he was a believer in family, loyalty, and the larger tapestry of those he loved.

Those who remain—his wife Mary Catherine Virginia (Myers) McConnaughy, children Shane (Sonya) McConnaughy of Washinton, PA and Kaitlyn (Reed) Campbell of Proctor, WV, granddaughters Amberleigh and Gemma, and one one the way,  his brothers and sisters, and all who called him friend—carry forward the memories, the laughter, the traditions, and the quiet strength that defined his days. To know David was to witness a life brimming with purpose, humor, generosity, and unwavering devotion.

His absence leaves a profound silence, but the stories, the mile markers of laughter and courage, will continue on through the hearts of his family and friends, as enduring as the horizon he always chased.

According to David's wish there will be no services.
