Cheryl "Cheri" Smogonovich, a beloved mother, daughter, and sister, passed away peacefully on May 4th, 2025, at Select Specialty Hospital in Weirton, West Virginia, with her caring family by her side.
Born on April 24th 1949, in Steubenville, Ohio, Cheryl was a shining light in the lives of those who had the privilege to know her.
A dedicated worker, Cheri was a lifeguard at the old Beatty Park Pool and also the New Beatty Park Pool for many years. She started her first career in 1969, a Style Beauty Salon where she worked for many years. Then she moved on to continue her career as a Housekeeper at the former St. John's Hospital now known as Trinity Medical Center West, where she retired after 23 years. After retirement she worked at Capri Sausage and Meatball for 13 years and was still working until the time of her becoming ill. Her warm spirit and tireless work ethic left a lasting impression on her colleagues and friends. Her kind nature extended to every corner of her professional life, just as it did her personal life.
Cheri proudly graduated from Steubenville Big Red High School and acquired her cosmetology license, showcasing her love for beauty and a desire to uplift others.
To her only child Tara, She was more than just my mom, she was my first teacher, she was my biggest support system, my best friend. Her wise words always guided me through life's ups and downs. Her strength became the foundation on which I built my own. Her love was constant and unconditional. Her kindness shined on even the darkest days. She was a woman of inner beauty and endless courage. I can still see her smile and I can still hear that laugh of hers. Which was far beyond radiant and contagious. She is more than just my mom. She is my Hero, my inspiration, Now my guardian Angel, She is the very heart of who I am today. to her sister Terri, She was not just a sibling but the best friend one could ever hope for a bond that remains unbroken despite the physical distance now placed between them. to her mother Liz, She was her first born child. The one who made me a mother for the first time. Not only was she my daughter, She also was my best friend. We shared countless memories throughout the years that we have spent together, up until the time she became a beautiful Angel. A bond between a Mother and daughter that will remain unbroken despite the distance now placed between us.
In addition to her family relationships, Cheri is not only a best friend but like a sister, to her lifelong closest friends A bond they shared that will remain unbroken.
She was a cherished member of American Legion Post 33. Every first Tuesday of the month Along with every Wednesday she went out to dinner and to the Legion for the drawings with her beloved friends/sisters. Where her compassionate spirit and generosity touched many lives. Cheri had a passion for crocheting, sewing, reading, swimming, and most of all always ready for a good game of Euchre. Her nurturing presence will be greatly missed but fondly remembered through the countless memories shared with family and friends.
