Charles "Charlie" Edward Coss

Charles “Charlie” Edward Coss, born on May 15, 1943, in Wheeling, WV, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2025, at Trinity West, surrounded by his loving family, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of all who knew him.

Charlie enjoyed the rare privilege of finding success in multiple careers over his lifetime. He began as an industrial engineer and foreman at the Mingo and Steubenville plants of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel before embarking on a second career as a Financial Advisor, a role he embraced for more than 25 years. He concluded his professional journey with his retirement from McCoy Wealth Management in Wheeling.

His dedication and commitment extended far beyond his professional life. Charlie was an active member of several community organizations, including the Polish Athletic Club, Order of the Moose Lodge 619, and American Legion Post 33.

Charlie’s passion for sports was a constant thread throughout his life. A proud 1961 graduate of Martins Ferry High School, he excelled as a four-sport athlete. As the team’s quarterback, he played a vital role on the storied 1960 “Five Tons of Fun Plus One” football team, which finished with a perfect 10–0 record, captured the OVAC Class AAA championship, and earned a No. 8 ranking in the state of Ohio. At Bethany College, Charlie was a member of the celebrated 1963–1964 men’s basketball team, the only squad in school history to complete a perfect regular season with an 18–0 record. The team concluded the year ranked in the College Division Top 25 poll and was later honored with induction into the Bethany College Hall of Fame.

Beyond his own playing days, Charlie gave back to the games he loved by serving for many years as an umpire for Ohio Valley baseball at every level. His competitive spirit extended to bowling leagues, where he cherished friendly rivalries, as well as to the golf course, where he was an avid and devoted player.

He also treasured the many adventures he shared with family and friends. Charlie loved to travel, especially taking cruises with his beloved wife and family, creating cherished memories together in beautiful places. Each year, he eagerly anticipated golf trips, whether to Santee, SC—where he proudly recorded his first hole-in-one—or to Champion Lakes, where good-natured competition and camaraderie defined his time with a close circle of friends and loved ones. One of his most memorable experiences was golfing the legendary Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland.

Charlie is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Diana (Littleton) Coss; his children, Charles (Connie) Coss of Steubenville and Michelle (Ron) Yost of Pittsburgh; grandchildren Erica Rogers and Corey (Kendal) Coss; and his great-grandchildren Deegan Rogers and Emmarie and Madilynn Coss. He will also be lovingly remembered for the special bond he shared with his beloved pets, Tango and Harvey.

He was preceded in death by his father, Chester M. Coss; his mother, Ruth E. (Wagner) Coss; and his siblings, Chester “Herk” Coss, Sandra (Coss) Brown, and Dennis Coss.

Charlie’s radiant smile, generous spirit, and warm personality touched the lives of many, and he will be deeply missed. His legacy of love, laughter, and joy will continue to live on through the memories of those who were fortunate enough to know him.

As per Charlie’s wishes, no formal service will be held. His family encourages friends and loved ones to honor his memory by sharing stories, laughter, and fond recollections that will keep his spirit alive for years to come. Schuetz Funeral Home is assisting the family during this time.
