Bertha Rose (Orban) Crossland, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home in Tiltonsville, OH, on November 30, 2025, at the age of 99.5. Born on April 15, 1926, in Mingo Junction, Ohio, Bertha lived a life rich with love, laughter, and cherished memories.

For over 20 years, she dedicated herself as a clerk at Strabley’s in Tiltonsville, where her warmth and friendly demeanor made her a favorite among customers. Bertha found joy in baking hams at home for the grocery store and delighting taste buds with her famous sandwiches sold at the local steel mill. Her entrepreneurial spirit was evident even in her youthful days; she sold penny candy for a penny, a true testament to her resourcefulness and charm.

A proud graduate of Warren Consolidated in 1943, Bertha reminisced about her school days, particularly her time in the school band, albeit with a playful disdain for the former military-style uniforms. She was not only fond of her education but also carried a wide array of interests and hobbies throughout her life. An avid bowler, she enjoyed participating in leagues, and her love for games extended to playing cards with friends and family. Her adventurous spirit led her to travel to nearly all states, with the exception of Hawaii and Alaska, and she relished the thrill of gambling at Wheeling Downs.

Bertha’s family was undoubtedly her pride and joy, encompassing her three children—Richard (Sharon) Crossland of Fort Worth, TX, Raymond “Ray Ray” (Carolyn) Crossland III of Mt. Pleasant, OH, and Mary Catherine “Cathi” (Joe) Dougherty of Tiltonsville, OH. Bertha's legacy of love continues through her ten grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren, who will forever carry her memory in their hearts. Bertha was also a nurturing soul who adored dogs, always welcoming strays into her home, fostering in them the same love and warmth she radiated to all around her.

She is survived by her sister, Agnes Magnone of McArthur, OH, and her sister-in-law, Barbara Crossland of Rayland, OH, with whom she shared joyful moments, including much time spent solving cryptograms. Bertha cherished her extended family, including many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Raymond Crossland Jr., her parents, Vincent and Mary (Holzopfel) Orban, as well as her two brothers, Jack and Vincent Jr. Orban, and her sister, Jean Orban.

Bertha Rose Crossland embodied a spirit of kindness and resilience, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. There will be no services at this time, but her vibrant spirit and the countless memories she leaves behind will continue to inspire and comfort her family and friends in the years to come. Schuetz Funeral Home is assisting the family.
